I Had to Call Poison Control...Twice

TL;DR: I invented something cool and you can preorder one here.

I was shopping for rugs at Big Lots when I looked down at my 3 year old son in the shopping cart. He had opened my purse and was happily munching on some Aleve liquid capsules...pills my grandma had handed me in a baggie on my way to the airport a few weeks prior. "These aren't safe," I thought at the time. "I'll toss them when I get to the airport so I don't hurt her feelings." Needless to say, I forgot to do that.

Another fine mommy moment - overloading the stroller till it tipped over in the airport bathroom.
My hands trembled as I Googled the number for poison control. I held the phone to my ear with my shoulder while I frantically wiped the liquid medication from Felix's lips and chin.

Thankfully, poison control said there was no need to worry and no need to take action. The amount he'd ingested wouldn't harm a kid his size. Phew.

So you can imagine how stupid I felt when a year later, the same kid got into an old purse of mine and ate a caffeine pill (meant to reduce water retention) at 9:00 one night. He had popped it right through its blister pack. Once again I called poison control and got lucky - no harm done. He went absolutely bonkers for an hour and then crashed and slept all night.

Loose pills in a cute tin - might as well be candy. Thanks to the brave mom who admitted she used to travel this way!
At that point, I thought it was time to get serious about finding a new type of child-resistant pill bottle that could fit into my purse. It was something I was sure existed if I just Googled hard enough! But no, there was nothing. There are pill bottles with timers, combination locks, water compartments and days-of-the-week stamps. But nothing that simply held multiple different medications in one child-resistant container.

So I decided to design one myself. With sample bottles, cardboard, and the help of an engineer and his drafting software and 3D printer, we finally arrived at Take Six, an amazing new travel pill bottle that does everything I need it to do! Patent protection was filed in June 2017.

And here is where you can help, dear friends. I need to raise at least $15,000 on Kickstarter by September 9th in order to produce these bottles. The awesome part is that if you pledge and we reach our goal, your reward is a Take Six bottle. And if we don't reach our goal, your card is never charged.

Please take a look, leave your comments (and a pledge if you could use a Take Six pill bottle), and share, share, share with your networks. The product has been VERY well received! A high number of people who find it pledge, so now it's just a matter of getting it in front of enough people to make it happen. Thanks for reading!

A Day in the Life

I've been inspired by my blogger friends to document a full, ordinary day. This is year #2.

6:49 AM – I wake to Remy shouting “Ma!” from his room on the other side of the house. He falls back to sleep, but I’m awake so I flip through Timehop and remember it’s time for my Day in the Life blog. I’m glad it’s on a weekend to capture something a little more fun. I get out of bed, feed the pets and start my coffee.

7:10 – Remy is awake for real. He greets me with a sweet “Ma, hewwo” when I walk into his room. He’s excited to find Felix’s balloon in the living room. “Be ball!” he exclaims. (beach ball) I tell him he’ll need to give it back when Felix wakes up.

Felix wakes a few minutes later and Remy happily hands him his balloon (wow). Felix votes for blueberry pancakes over French toast, so I make a bunch so I can freeze the extras. Remy eats three bites and drinks his weight in milk. Felix proudly shows me how he cuts his own pancake while he eats.

8 – I post an odd job on Craigslist and immediately find someone who says they’ll do it at 10. I go outside to check the weather and the tires on the double jogger and decide my exercise today will be a walk to the dollar store a mile away for St. Paddy’s Day party supplies. I start a load of laundry and run the dishwasher. (The house cleaner loaded it yesterday but forgot to run it.)

Remy pops Felix’s balloon, Felix cries for a minute. I ask Remy to apologize and he does, then abruptly says “Bye” and walks away from Felix. We all start laughing. Kids watch Daniel Tiger and other cartoons. I get a cute video of Remy practicing saying "Felix". "Be-bixsh...Feee...Be-bixsh."

10:20 – The people who offered to do the odd job are late and want another 20 minutes. I tell them to forget about it, and we walk to the gas station to put air in the jogger tires. Next we enjoy a cold, sunny, noisy and smelly walk along a major street to the dollar store. I notice how unwalkable the area is – missing sidewalks, tipped-over signs, pot holes, etc. but the boys love all the car dealerships we’re passing. Felix shows me the white Jeep he’s going to buy and Remy yells “a bus!” anytime a bus goes by.

At the dollar store I lock our jogger to a fake flower display on the sidewalk (no bike rack) and we load up on party supplies. Remy really wants all the toy trucks so I end up football carrying him out of the store while he kicks and screams. (I know they’re just a dollar, but we have SO MANY cars and trucks. I can’t say yes every time.) The grocery store is across the street so we run in for lunch stuff.

11:45 – We’re back home and have an awesome spring lunch of sandwiches, raspberries, BBQ chips and Girl Scout cookies. And another huge cup of milk for Remy.

12 – Felix offers “I’m not sleepy” which of course means he is sleepy. No time for a nap because we need to leave for a basketball game in an hour. I put Remy down for a nap anyway – he’s exhausted. I decide to take a full shower (wash hair) but oops, all the towels are in the wash. I find a clean monster towel and decide it’s good enough.

1:10 – Wake a very groggy Remy, put him in BSU clothes and load everyone into the car. It will be nearly an hour before we park and walk toward the arena due to game day traffic. Felix falls asleep in the car.

2:15 – Game time! We missed the intro but met up with my parents and everyone had a great time. The boys loved riding on the shuttle bus, saying hi to Buster Bronco and eating snacks. The boys get comments on their cuteness everywhere we go.

4:30 – Grocery shopping, with free samples and a cookie from the bakery. The boys point out the pinatas they want. Felix wants the motorcycle for his birthday party, and says Remy wants the firetruck. Remy asks to try on a giant foam hand we tried on last week – kid has an amazing memory. (And geez, I’m realizing we’ve eaten a LOT of junk today!)

5:15 – Home and making dinner. Felix chose veggie burgers and everyone digs in, despite having eating so much junk at the game. I give each of the boys a pickle slice because they love to taste and make silly sour faces, so they do that throughout the meal. Felix’s lack of sleep is catching up with him and he’s off-the-wall bonkers. Shouting, jabbing Remy, and even throwing his burger across the table at one point. I try to explain than he needs to be a good boy even though he’s feeling goofy.

6:20 – A nice guy named Bill shows up to do the odd job from Craigslist. Turns out his wife saw my post and dispatched him. The boys watch from the living room window while I help load a pickup truck with huge piles of willow switches, branches and leaves. He calls the boys my “two little soldiers” and tells me he has 4 kids who are all grown, and they all stayed in the area except one who is “somewhere in Montana.” I have a moment where I’m grateful my parents aren’t spending their Saturdays doing odd jobs, and I give Bill more than I said I would in the ad. (I also realize he could be a millionaire who loves doing odd jobs with his truck. You never know…)

7 – Bedtime for Remy. He has officially lost his mind thanks to lack of sleep. He’s really wound up so I try singing to him, but he shouts “NO!” for every song until I get to Maybe from the movie Annie. I sing a few more songs and he finally lies down and asks me to put his blanket over him after I hum the theme from Phantom of the Opera (need to brush up on the lyrics before I see it live this summer.) He sleeps in a pack n play that he’s 100% capable of climbing out of if motivated, so it’s important he go to bed happy!

7:30 – Watching Roseanne reruns and April the giraffe’s live cam with Felix. We can see the baby moving in her belly, but she’s taking too long so we watch other videos of giraffes having babies. When we’re done, Felix lays his head on my tummy and asks why I “dopted” Remy. So we talk again about how he and Remy both grew in their birth moms’ tummies and we open Facebook to look at my mom’s photo album from the day Remy was born. Felix is all smiles. I notice what a short, round toddler he is in all the photos. So cute.

8 – Bedtime for Felix. This is 90 minutes early due to lack of a real nap. He asks me to "carry myself" to bed and he talks about how big he has gotten. I brush his teeth, put on his overnight diaper (he disposes of them on his own each morning) and tuck him into my bed, where he has slept since the great flood of 2014. He is out without a peep – not even a request for a drink of water. I’m feeling unusually tired…slightly worried I’m coming down with something. I’m happy to see SNL is a rerun so I have no reason to stay up late. Pour a glass of wine anyway.

10:15 – Why am I still awake? I guess I’ll post this blog and call it a night. We’re headed to the hot springs tomorrow morning and I’m very much looking forward to it!
