Over the
past nearly 8 months I’ve learned a lot about baby products: What’s useful,
what’s not, and why I need what I swore I’d never use. I’ll break them down
into three categories.
Can’t Live Without
Bouncy chair that vibrates – Felix napped in his bouncy chair from the day he was born and
still enjoys sitting in it and playing with the toy bar while I’m in the
shower. The batteries died a long time ago, but he doesn’t mind.
Doorway jumper – He bounces all morning while I get ready for work. Perfect for the
in-between months when they don’t want to lie down all the time, but can’t walk
yet, especially if you need to keep them in one area.
Boppy “nursing” pillow – Felix slept swaddled on the pillow when he was really tiny,
I used it for arm support while feeding him, we used it when he was learning to
sit on his own, and he loves laying in it while feeding himself a bottle
now.
Tags – Silky
tags, Velcro tags, looped tags or single-ply. Doesn’t matter, Felix loves to
chomp them all. It’s one of the ways he soothes himself to fall asleep. We have
a
Taggies blanket that’s pretty cool.
Travel swing
– We used ours daily until recently, and I often took it friends’ houses and
events when he was really young. It easily fit in the trunk of my car and
included lights, toys and music like the big swings.
Surprisingly Unhelpful
Teething
rings – Felix has had teething symptoms for months, but he’s never enjoyed
chewing on teething toys.
Big fancy
swing – Took up too much space in the living room and didn’t do anything better
than the travel version.
Diaper Genie
– it just doesn’t hold enough diapers. It’s easier to have a big $4 garbage can
for the wet ones and seal off the stinky ones before tossing them in (or take
them outside.)
Binkies –
Felix has never been interested in pacifiers, regardless of his age or mood.
Hungry, sick, bored, waking up at night, doesn’t matter. He doesn’t want a
binkie.
Bassinet –
He wouldn’t sleep in his bassinet until he was 5 months old and he's almost outgrown it already. As a tiny boy, he much preferred
his
Rock N Play sleeper, which holds him at a slight incline.
Bumbo chair
– He always looked so uncomfortable in Bumbos and
didn’t seem to really enjoy them, so I’m glad we never bought one.
Can’t Believe I Bought It
Stroller with Ginormous Wheels – Absolutely necessary almost all the time. Any event on
grass, snow, dirt, gravel or brick (downtown streets, for example) simply can’t
be navigated with your standard “travel system” stroller. I never understood
why moms pushed around the giant joggers…now I get it. I still have a small
umbrella stroller that comes in handy, but the jogger is usually ideal.

Restaurant high chair cover – I always thought the moms with chair covers were uptight
germophobes. That’s until Felix slid out of his restaurant high chair and got
wedged in the leg hole. It took three adults, some body part maneuvering and a
good belly squeeze to dump him out onto the restaurant floor. He was shaken but
okay. What surprised me is how fast it happened! He’d been buckled in and sitting
fine all night, then suddenly I noticed he was backwards, halfway out and
stuck.
