Working Parent Rant

Boy am I annoyed by the lack of fitness classes for moms.

The only stroller-friendly class meets weekdays at 9 am. The gym daycare closes too early during the week and has very limited weekend hours. I can't afford the Y and their daycare closes at 6 anyway. I looked into short-term fitness classes through community ed, but they aren't stroller friendly, don't offer daycare, and/or the daycare facility is closed before evening classes start.

This all feeds into the idea that women should not work. They should be at home making babies, only interested in scheduling activities for themselves between 9 am - 5 pm. When hubby isn't at work, you want to be available for him! What if he needs something?

Okay I'm not really that bitter, but in a city this size, the options are a joke. I inquired about starting a stroller-friendly franchise of my own, and the online form wanted to know if my net worth was more than $100,000, and do I have more than $25,000 in liquid assets?

It doesn't help we lost half of our summer to red-warning air quality thanks to forest fires, and after those cleared up, there was a cougar/cougars roaming our parks and mauling animals and people were advised to avoid the areas, especially with dogs. I wasn't about to venture out in the cool fall evenings with a baby and a dog.

Now it is 6 degrees outside and dark by the time I get home from work. So the old "jog around the block" isn't even an option.

Ready to run, mom!
Arrggghhh...can you tell I'm ready for spring? I think Felix is, too.

  1. Once again, we are living the same life! During the summer, it was in the 100's, then in fall we had mountain lion sightings very near to my house, now the highs are in the teens. I think the lack of fitness centers for new moms is to make Hollywood feel better because they can stay in shape easier than us plain folk! It's a conspiracy I tell ya! :)

  2. I SO agree with you! It's unbelievable that the Y is so freaking expensive (also seems to assume that a family membership has two adults to make the cost more reasonable). We should start a campaign for them to create a "single parent family" membership! In addition to the lack of exercise options, wait until you start looking into things like music classes, etc. Seems like all the music, baby-and-me yoga, etc- type classes are during the workday. Like working mom's don't want to do these things with their kids. The early intervention services are just as guilty in assuming you don't work - they are constantly giving me flyers about "Come see Signing Santa" (Thursday at 11 am); or ASL storytime at the Library! (Wed at 9 am)... I'm constantly reminding them that, uh, well some of us have to work. It sucks!
